Description

According to Nobel Prize-winning economist S. Kuznets, 'there are four types of countries in the world: developed, underdeveloped, Japan and Argentina'. Argentina can be a difficult country to understand. So on this walking tour we will walk through the historic center of Buenos Aires asking ourselves: how did Argentina become the country of the chainsaw? Why is Argentina's history marked by economic crisis, inflation, indebtedness and repression? Guerrillas, military dictatorship, state terrorism, military uprisings, neoliberalism: all this will come into play during the tour, which will take us back to the 1970s. The tour starts at the former Club Atlético concentration camp and ends at the Edificio Libertad. The stops are as follows: 1) Ex-clandestine detention center / concentration camp 'Club Atlético': At this stop we will talk about the last military dictatorship and state terrorism: The systematic plan of kidnapping, disappearance and torture and the Condor Plan. 2) From there we will go to the Faculty of Engineering (building built during the Peronist period and intended as the headquarters of the Evita Foundation). Here we will talk about the history of coups d'état in Argentina. 3) From there we will continue to Puerto Madero and/or the Ecological Reserve. In addition to talking about the history of the port, we will also talk about the ecological reserve and its links to the urban planning policy of the last military dictatorship. 4) We will continue to the Ministry of Defense. This building was a protagonist during the military uprising of 1990, which will allow us to talk about the return of democracy to Argentina, the trials of the military juntas in 1985 and the military threats. 5) We will continue on to the Ministry of Economy. At this stop we will focus on the neoliberalism of the Menemist decade (1989 - 1999) and we will talk about the economic policy of '1 to 1' (1 dollar for one peso). It was this measure that led to the political, social and economic crisis of 2001. 6) Finally, arriving at Plaza de Mayo, we will go deeper into the 2001 crisis: its characteristics, victims and the repression of the protests. We will talk about the links between these events and the candidacy of the current president, Javier Milei. We will also take the opportunity to admire the historic buildings surrounding the square and talk briefly about them: the Cabildo, the Casa Rosada, the Buenos Aires Cathedral. Together with the handkerchiefs of the grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo, we will remember the struggle of the human rights movement in the country. 7) Finally, we will go to the 'Edificio Libertad' (former Kirchner Cultural Center / CCK). Here we will be able to talk about the last 20 years of Argentine politics and finish understanding Milei's success in the last elections.
