Description

The excursion starts with a bus transfer from El Calafate to Los Glaciares National Park. At the “Bajo de las Sombras” cruise port, 70 km from El Calafate, participants board a boat crossing Lake Rico to reach the glacier’s southern face.

Upon arrival, mountain guides equip guests with crampons, helmets, and harnesses, then review safety protocols. The trek begins with a two-hour hike through moraine and forest areas offering panoramic glacier views, leading to the glacier ascent.

On the ice, the approximately three-hour trek reveals blue lagoons, deep cracks, drains, and occasionally ice caves. Guides explain the glacier’s formation and dynamics while pointing out nearby landmarks such as Dos Picos, Pietrobelli, and Cervantes hills. A 30-minute lunch break is included in a scenic setting.

The return hike follows the same route back to the refuge, allowing one last look at the landscape. A boat cruise along the glacier’s southern wall completes the tour before returning to El Calafate.

The experience also includes a one-hour guided visit to the Perito Moreno Glacier boardwalks, located 7 km from the cruise port, where visitors can explore panoramic trails independently.

The total duration is approximately 12 hours with included transfers or 7.5 hours if travelers reach Bajo de las Sombras port independently. The trek operates regardless of rain, unless safety conditions prevent it.
