Description
Cerro Tronador, standing at 3,450 meters, features three summits: Chilean, international, and Argentinean. Starting in San Carlos de Bariloche, the route follows National Route 258 toward El Bolsón, then Route 254 to the south part of Lake Mascardi, reaching Pampa Linda village. Pampa Linda offers basic facilities including a hostel, restaurant, campground, park guard, and a Gendarmería Nacional post.
From Pampa Linda, multiple trails for walking or horseback riding provide access to natural attractions such as the Manso Glacier and Negro Snowdrift. These glaciers form the Manso Superior River, which flows through the Valley of the Vuriloches into Lake Mascardi.
Experienced climbers can continue to the Otto Meiling refuge at 2,000 meters, the starting point for summit ascents. Cerro Tronador’s name comes from the thunder-like sounds created by large ice detachments.
