Description
Starting from Ushuaia, we'll take National Route 3, which will be our companion for most of the park tour. Our first stop will be the Cañadón del Toro, where we'll check out different landscapes typical of Tierra del Fuego, like the huge peat bogs and the so-called 'tree cemetery', forests cut down during the prison era that, in silence, tell us the story of the origins of Ushuaia as a penal colony. In this area, we'll also take a walk along the Pipo River, and we'll cross the ancient forests to get to a small waterfall that forms in it.
We keep going to Ensenada Zaratiegui Bay to check out the mix of environments that makes this national park one-of-a-kind: 'the Andes, the forest, and the sea all come together in one spot.' This is also where you'll find the famous End of the World Post Office, where, if it's open, you can get your passport stamped or send a postcard from the end of the continent. From here, we'll start another amazing trail that takes us along the Beagle Channel coast through a Guindo forest, with stops at beautiful beaches with unique colors.
We'll keep going to the Lapataia River and walk upstream to its source at the Acigami (Roca) glacial lake, one of the most unforgettable spots in Tierra del Fuego.
Finally, we'll get to the Lapataia Bay area, where we'll combine different short trails to visit and learn about the environments impacted by the beaver, reach viewpoints with unique views, and finally finish the walk in Lapataia Bay, literally the end of America. This is where the last kilometer of the Pan-American Highway (and Route 3) is located, which runs from Alaska to the southern tip of this national park.
