Description
Big Ice is an unforgettable, physically demanding experience that combines adventure, nature, and exploration in the heart of the Perito Moreno Glacier. The excursion begins in El Calafate, from where passengers are transported in comfortable buses to Los Glaciares National Park. During the trip, tour guides provide information about the glacier, its surroundings, and the activity.
The adventure begins at the 'Bajo de las Sombras' port, located 70 km from El Calafate. There, visitors board a boat to cross Lake Rico, sailing for 20 minutes in front of the majestic south face of the glacier. Upon arrival at the refuge, expert mountain tour guides welcome the group, divide them into subgroups, and equip them with crampons, helmets, and harnesses, in addition to explaining the necessary safety rules. Once equipped and on the glacier, visitors witness a unique landscape: blue lagoons, deep crevasses, huge sinkholes, and, if we are lucky, fascinating caves that give a completely new perspective on the natural world.
The trek on the ice, which lasts approximately three hours, allows passengers to explore the glacier in detail and better understand its immensity and uniqueness. Mountain tour guides share information about the formation and dynamics of the glacier, while visitors enjoy the surrounding views, including the Dos Picos, Pietrobelli, and Cervantes hills. In addition, there is a 30-minute break for lunch in an incredibly beautiful setting. Participants then board the boat again for a cruise close to the south face of the glacier before returning to civilization. In total, the experience lasts approximately 12 hours if using the transportation provided, or 7.5 hours if passengers travel to the 'Bajo de las Sombras' port on their own from El Calafate.
Big Ice takes place in a dynamic natural environment, where weather conditions and glacier characteristics are constantly changing. However, as long as safety conditions allow, the excursion will not be canceled, ensuring a unique and safe experience. We look forward to seeing you for a true mountaineering adventure!
